Father and Friend! Thy light, Thy love,
Beaming through all Thy works we see;
Thy glory gilds the heavens above,
And all the earth is full of Thee.

Thy voice we hear, Thy presence feel,
While Thou, too pure for mortal sight,
Involved in clouds, invisible,
Reignest the Lord of life and light.

We know not in what hallowed part
Of the wide heavens Thy throne may be,
But this we know, that where Thou art,
Strength, wisdom, goodness dwell with Thee.

Thy children shall not faint nor fear,
Sustained by this exalted thought;
Since Thou, their God, art everywhere,
They cannot be where Thou art not!

Brazos River Canoe Trip

My dad and I went canoeing yesterday on a stretch of the river we hadn’t ever been on before.  There was a bit more humanity out there than we had bargained for (it was Friday, after all), but the small fish nibbling at my feet during lunch and the brief sightings of gar in the shallow water made up for that, as well as the numerous egrets, herons, and hawks that we saw while paddling.

Blanche Milum's New Year

This continues the series of poems and short stories taken from Ailenroc’s Book, by Cornelia Alexander

Of all the beautiful, accomplished young ladies who brightened by their presence the town of Greenville, Blanche Milum reigned the acknowledged belle, by right of birth and breeding; and, joined to these, she was the lucky owner of an almost perfect face; a graceful, supple figure; and the most winning, charming manners.

It was the last day of the year, and she stood upon the hearth rug looking with satisfied eyes upon the adornings of her parlor, and chatting busily with her aunt, a middle-aged widow lady, who was visiting Mr. Milum’s family.

“Auntie, dear,” said Blanche, gayly, “I fear that you do not approve of my arrangements for the morrow. If not, speak out and let me know if you think I have done amiss.”

“I have not expressed any dissatisfaction,” said her aunt, smiling gravely. “It is not my place to find fault with you or your home; still—” Read More

Music of Moya Brennan

Moya Brennan (Gaelic: Máire Ní Bhraonáin) is the lead singer for the Irish band Clannad, whose music I have come to love.  I was going to post a video from YouTube of “Against the Wind,” one of my favorite songs of hers from her first solo album.  However, this proved to be non-embeddable, so you can go look at it there if you wish:  Against the Wind.  And here are a couple of other videos, the first a traditional Irish folk song, and the other a song she wrote for her latest album.

Hymn of the Week – Oh, the Depth and the Riches

Music and words by Tillit S. Teddlie

Oh the depth and the riches of God’s saving grace
Flowing down from the cross for me!
There the debt for my sins by the Savior was paid
In His suffering on Calvary!

Oh the riches and depth of such wonderful love,
Flowing boundless and full and free!
And the debt on the cross for my sins was all paid
In His suffering on Calvary!

How my heart humbly bows in His presence today,
When I think of His agony,
By His stripes I am freed from the bondage of sin
Through His suffering on Calvary!

Oh what marvelous mercy, what infinite love!
What immeasurable grace I see!
By His blood I am cleansed; I am happy and free
Through His suffering on Calvary!
